Bacon in our Future?

Well, It looks like we're in the pig biz for the next 5 months.  We picked up the kids' 4-H piggies this weekend and they are cute as a button!

Meet "Hank", named after the infamous and ever popular "Hank the Cowdog".  He's our son's 4-H pig.  And below is the lovely"Miss Beulah".  She belongs to our oldest daughter.  Beulah is the Collie that Hank the Cow dog is madly in love with.

There's also a pretty old hymn called "Beulah Land" that we sing in church on occasion, but my guess is that no-one's ever heard of it.

Bad picture of the kids, I know, but it was the only one where the pigs weren't on the go.

We spent the  next day building a temporary pen for the little cuties, and I think they're diggin' their new pad.

Today, we hauled Jake up near the house for the summer, and that old man has clearly never seen anything of the swine variety in all of his days.  First, he trotted back and forth in front of their pen with ears  in full alert.

Then his curiosity got the best of him and he went over to investigate the creatures that were making those weird noises.

Here they are making formal introductions.  A sniff from Jake, a grunt from Miss Beulah, and the two became fast friends.

Jake is saying, "I've got my eye on you peculiar little creatures."

This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship!

  1. does the tune go? Buelah Land, sweet Buelah Land, as on the highest rock I stand, I look away across the sea where mansions are prepared for me?

I love that song...we used to sing it a lot when I was little, but I haven't heard it in a long time now...guess I will have to request it...

one of my friends used to raise 4-H pigs...I remember her pigs were named Bacon and Sausage! lol

    1. I see I'm not the only one who remembers the hymn! Nice! I wanted to name one pig Hammy Fay Bacon but the kids didn't go for it. :)

  3. Oh, I miss having pigs to feed scraps to, if we could find some cheap again we'd have bacon in our future.
    Yummo!

  4. I love the pictures! I don't necessarily miss the pigs and the mess/smell that they bring. I do miss having pork on hand all the time. I have heard of Buelah Land, but it's been awhile since I've heard the song.

  5. Girl, Beulah Land is one of my FAVORITE hymns ever. I grew up hearing it at funerals, but I absolutely love it any day of the week. Love, love, love.
As for piggies, they're cute! We're getting one next week to feed out for the next 30 days and then on to the packers in June. It's so nice to have a freezer of fresh beef and pork! Now, if only I could muster up the courage to butcher my own chickens.... *shudder* ..... ;)

    1. I butchered chickens one time. It was the messiest job that I've ever been a part of, and the smelly feathers stuck all over my hands. It's not for the faint of heart, I'll tell ya! I'm not sure if it was worth it or not. You definitely need an assembly line going, and multiple birds to make it worth all the trouble.

What you need are friends with that pioneer spirit who will be willing to raise and butcher broilers with you. Most of my friends would rather just buy them at the grocery store. Ha!

  6. I know the song!!!!! :)
Little pigs are so cute! I keep telling John we need to get one to feed out, so I won't have to keep buying sausage. I don't even buy bacon, its so high!

We have had many 'Hanks' and Beaulah's in our lives. ;) Right now we have Pete the barn cat.
