Topsy Turvy

Things have been crazy around here the last few weeks, and any semblance of a daily routine has been thrown right out the window.  I'm just going with the flow, and enjoying the adventure.

It all started with my husband's unexpected trip to the border.  He went to work last Monday, and at lunch he was told that there was an urgent welding job that needed to be completed that week in Nogales, AZ.  Their welder was injured and unable to complete the job, so my husband came home, threw some clothes in a bag, and headed off to make the 5 hour trip to the Mexican Border.

When he's gone, my work doubles on the home-front.  I kissed him goodbye, rolled up my sleeves, and plowed through the chores.  He took a camera along to take some pictures so I could see just exactly how close to Mexico he was.

That's a BIG border fence.

Below, are some pictures of the colorful houses across the Mexican border.  Pink and blue houses must be a home owners' association nightmare!  Just kidding.

Here's the port of entry for trucks.  My husband was so close to Mexico that his phone wouldn't work because he didn't have an international calling plan.

The only bright spot to having my husband working on the border is the abundance of  delicious Mexican food.  He gets to eat it day and night, and he brings some home for me too.  Unfortunately, in the four months since he was last there, his favorite Mexican food spot burned down.  This sign is all that is left of it. I've been in the depths of despair about it.  Why? Because it had the best re-fried beans in the world! No "Pete's Kitchen" = No beans for me. And we all know about my love affair with the Lowly Frijolo.

The good news: they're going to rebuild!

When my husband came home, it was like Christmas! He brought us 5 dozen tortillas to freeze, several pints of re-fried beans from another restaurant, and some fresh Horchata (a sweet rice/cinnamon drink).  We had a celebratory feast that night with all of our loot.

After he got home, I had a few days to wash his clothes before he was off again...this time for elk hunting!

  1. We have a lot of Mexicans living in our area of SW Missouri. They paint their houses here like that too. You can always tell which houses and what vehicles belong to the mexicans. I think they paint their houses like that so it's easier to give directions! LOL! "NO, not the pink and purple house, the pink and green house!"

  2. I have a recipe for quesadilla casserole that you'd probably like if you like Mexican food. It's great on those really busy days when you don't have much time to cook, cause it doesn't take much time or effort. Let me know if you're interested and I'll email it to you.

  3. Oooo...almost forgot. I also have one for burrito pie that's a "family recipe" that I'll pass on if you'd like it. The "crust" is made from refried beans.

  4. Glad you got some spoils from the trip! Beans and tortillas....yum! We've been working on making our own tortillas (a friend from Mexico comes to help...well actually to laugh at us making them!)
    Enjoy!

  5. Donna- You're cracking me up!

Kristina- Those recipes sound delicious. I'd be honored if you'd share them with me. Mexican food is our absolute favorite!

Keri- I've tried to make homemade tortillas, but I don't think I have the touch. Mine are always too thick. I think I need a friend from Mexico to teach me their secrets, too! LOL!!!

  6. Hey, I've heard of "Pete Kitchen" before! Louie L'Amour incorporated him into one of his books,"Catlow". I had no idea he was a real rancher! Thanks for the fun trivia tidbit. :)
